Flank steak is a lean, flavorful cut of beef that benefits from the effects of a marinade. It is somewhat tough and is best cooked when thinly sliced at an angle just across the grain.
When flank steak is prepared thinly sliced, marinated and in high heat, it almost completely melts in your mouth. Thereby making it more delicious and satisfying.
What to serve with flank steak?
Grilled marinated flank steak
This is an amazing recipe that is perfect for any time of the day. It deals with the use of a marinade which is prepared with garlic, onions, soy sauce and honey. This marinade is responsible for the extra delicious outcome you get after preparing it.
Let’s take a quick look on how to prepare the Steak
Prep time: 10 minutes
Cook time: 20 minutes
Marinating time: 2 hours
Yields: 6 servings
Skill level: Easy.
Ingredients:
1. â…“ cup extra virgin olive oil
2. ÂĽ cup honey
3. â…“ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
4. 2 pounds flank steak
5. 2 cloves garlic, minced
6. 2 tablespoon red wine vinegar
7. ÂĽ cup soy sauce
Step by step instructions
The first thing you need to do is to marinate the steak.
How do I marinate the steak?
1. First, combine all the marinade ingredients in a large bowl.
2. Place steak in the bowl and turn so that it is completely coated with the marinade.
Note: You can as well place the steak and marinade in a freezer bag and then carefully place it in a bowl.
3. Chill and marinate for nothing less than 2 hours or better still, till the next day (overnight).
4. Prepare your grill for high, direct heat with one part of the grill for lower, indirect heat. You will know when the grill is hot enough when you hold your hand about an inch over the hot side and you can only hold it there for just a second.
To grill the steak:
5. First remove the steak from the marinade and gently shake off the excess marinade from the steak. Be sure that when shaking off the excess marinade, there is still a coating of it. This is so because you will want the oil on it to help keep the steak from sticking to the grill.
6. Sprinkle coarse salt and freshly ground pepper on all sides if you desire. This is so because the salt and pepper helps to form a savory crust on the steak.
7. Now carefully place steak on the hot side of the grill, and grill for about 1 minute or 2 on each side so as to get a good sear. Once that is done, move the steak to the cooler side of the grill, and then cover and cook for just a few minutes more until it is fully prepared just the way you like it.
Note:
You will know when the steak is done when you poke it with your fingertips. The steak will be a bit squishy when it is raw. But when it is done, the texture is just like when you touch the tip of your nose.
Another way to know when the steak is done is by using a meat thermometer. At 125 degree Fahrenheit for rare, pull the steak out of the grill. At 130 to 140 degree Fahrenheit for medium rare, pull it out. At 145 degree Fahrenheit for medium, pull the steak off the grill.
8. Now when the steak has cooked to your satisfaction, carefully remove from the grill and then place on a cutting board.
9. Once you have done that, cover with aluminum foil so as to hold in the heat while the steak rests for approximately 10-15 minutes.
10. Carefully slice across the grain. Note that you are to cut it in a way that breaks up the muscle fibers. This is done because flank steak is usually tough and chewy except the muscle fibers are broken.
Therefore, you are to cut the steak across the grain of meat at a steep diagonal so as to make the slices wide. You can either use a long sharp knife or perhaps a long serrated bread knife for the cutting.
Recipe note:
You can as well boil the excess marinade, simmer for a few minutes and serve with the fleak steak. This recipe is also good with salsa.
