Step by step instructions on how to make the best apple pie

The first procedure is to make the dough. To make the dough:

1. Whisk together the flour, aswell as the sugar, and salt in a medium size bowl. Add the butter into the dry ingredients using your fingers until it resembles yellow corn meal mixed with bean sized bits of butter.

Note that if the flour and butter mixture gets warm, be sure to refrigerate it for just 10 minutes before carrying out the other procedures.

2. Add the egg and stir the dough together. You can either do this by using a fork or by using your hand in the bowl.

Note that if the dough is dry, be sure to sprinkle up to a tablespoon more of cold water over the mixture.

3. Now make the dough in a food processor. Pulse the flour,as well as the sugar, and salt until it is well combined. Once you have done that, add the butter and pulse until it is as yellow as corn meal mixed with bean size bits of butter. Note that this should only take about 10 times.

4. Add the egg and pulse 1 to 2 times.

Note that you are to be careful not to allow  the dough form into a ball in the machine. Therefore, if the dough seems to be very dry, just add one tablespoon more of cold water.

5. Remove the bowl from the machine, and bring the dough together using your hand. Now form the dough into a disk. Once you have done that, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until it is thoroughly chilled. This should only take at least 1 hour.

The next procedure is how to make the filling. To make the filling:

6. Put the lemon juice in a medium bowl. Peel the apples, cut them in halves, and core them. Once you have done that, cut each half into 4 wedges. Toss the apple together with the lemon juice. Add the sugar and toss to combine evenly.

7. Using a large skillet, melt the butter over medium-high heat. Once you have done that, add the apples, and cook, stirring at intervals until you notice that the sugar has dissolved and the mixture beginning to simmer. This should only take about 2 minutes.

8. Cover, and then reduce heat to medium-low. Cook until the apples become very soft and they release their juices. This process will only take about 7 minutes.

9. Strain the apples in a colander over a medium bowl. This is done so as to catch all the juice. Now return the juices to the skillet, and simmer over medium heat until it becomes thickened and is lightly caramelized. This should only take about 10 minutes. Toss the apples with the reduced juice and spices in a medium size bowl and set aside to cool completely.

10. Cut the dough in equal halves. Roll each half of the dough into a disc on a lightly floured surface. The disc should be about 12 inches wide. Lay the dough between pieces of parchment or perhaps wax paper on a baking sheet, and refrigerate for nothing less than 10 minutes minimum.

11. Carefully place a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.

12. Line the bottom of a 9-inch pie pan with one of the dough. Trim it so it lays about ½ inch beyond the edge of the pan. Now put the apple filling in the pan and mound it slightly in the center. Gently brush the top edges of the dough with the egg.

13. Once you have done that, place the second disc of dough over the top. After that, you are to carefully fold the upper layer of dough under the edge of the bottom layer then press the edges together to close it. Be sure to brush the surface of the dough with egg and then sprinkle with sugar. Use a fork to pierce the top of the dough. This is done so as to allow the steam escape while baking. Refrigerate for just 15 minutes maximum.

14. Bake the pie on a baking sheet until you notice that the crust is golden. This should only take about 50 minutes. Allow it to cool on a rack before serving.

Note:

You can either keep it at room temperature for 24 hours, or refrigerated for up to 4 days.

2. ¼ cup flour

3. 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

4. 5 to 6 cups Granny Smith Apples (peeled and sliced into ¼ inch pieces)

5. 1 tablespoon lemon juice

6. ⅓ cup light brown sugar

7. ⅓ cup granulated sugar

2. ⅓ cup light brown sugar

3. ½ cup cold butter (cubed)

4. ⅓ cup granulated sugar.

Add all ingredients to shopping list ✅

Step by step instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375 degree Fahrenheit and adjust the oven rack to the lowest position.

2. Roll out the pie dough to a 12- inch circle and fit it into a pie plate (I recommend you use a 9 inch pie plate), crimp the edges.

3. Once you have done that, carefully place the pie plate in the refrigerator before you proceed to the next steps.

4. Combine the apples, as well as the flour, cinnamon, lemon juice, brown sugar, and granulated sugar in a large bowl. Stir with a wooden spoon or you can as well use your hand. Set aside when you are sure it is well coated.

The next procedure is to prepare the topping. To prepare the topping,

5. First combine the flour, together with the butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar in a medium bowl.

6. Use either a pastry cutter or fork to blend the mixture together until coarse crumbs form.

7. Use your hands to squeeze the mixture together until all the butter is absorbed and the crumb topping comes together.

8. Now remove the pie plate from the refrigerator and spread the apples evenly into the crust. Be sure to discard liquid that has been released from the apples as they are not needed. Once you have done that, sprinkle the crumb topping evenly on the apples.

The next procedure is the baking process

9. Bake for approximately 50 to 60 minutes, or until the apple mixture begins to bubble and the crumb and crust is golden.

Note that if the crust or crumb begins to brown too quickly, you are to cover the pie loosely with foil or pie shield. Also make sure to bake the pie long enough for the mixture to bubble. This is done so as to ensure that the bottom crust is properly.

It is also necessary to note that since you are baking the apples raw they tend to release juice naturally which can make the bottom crust a little bit soggy. Therefore, I recommend you position the rack to the lowest position and bake the pie long enough to ensure the bottom crust bakes properly.

10. Carefully remove the pie from the oven after it is ready. Bring to room temperature before serving.

Note:

You can either keep it at room temperature for 24 hours, or refrigerated for up to 4 to 5 days.
